In these six stories, Michael Vatikiotis explores the paradoxical and tragic world after Al Qaeda’s attacks on the United States on September 11 2001. Set mostly in Muslim Southeast Asia, the stories highlight perceptions of Muslim society and Islam in the wake of the attacks. There is a view of Ground Zero and the aftermath of the attacks in New York through the eyes of a visiting Indonesian student, and the story of how the dull life of a Singapore civil servant alters dramatically when he starts reading books about the war on terror. We hear the confessions of an Indonesian security agent turned terrorist sympathizer, and explore the murky and mysterious Malay Muslim insurgency along the borders of Thailand and Malaysia.
